Guide: Instant e-PAN

Instant e-PAN - Complete Guide

Instant e-PAN is a service by the Income Tax Department for immediate allotment of PAN (on near real-time basis).

Eligibility Criteria:

  • You must NOT hold a PAN card already.
  • You must have a valid Aadhaar number.
  • Your mobile number must be linked with Aadhaar.
  • You do not need to submit any physical documents.

Important Note:

This service allows you to get a digitally signed e-PAN for FREE. If you need a physical card later, you will have to order it separately by paying ₹50.

For Reprint (No Change in Data):

  • PAN Number (Mandatory)
  • Aadhaar Number (Mandatory for linking)
  • Date of Birth
  • Note: If using e-KYC (Paperless mode), no physical documents need to be sent.

For Correction/Change in Data:

  • Proof of Identity (e.g., Aadhaar, Voter ID)
  • Proof of Address (e.g., Aadhaar, Bank Statement)
  • Proof of Date of Birth (e.g., Birth Certificate, Matriculation Certificate)

Important:

For a simple reprint (Lost/Damaged card with no changes), use the "Request for Reprint of PAN Card" facility on NSDL/UTIITSL. You only need your PAN and Aadhaar number. OTP will be sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile.

PAN Application - Complete Guide

You can apply for a new PAN card through NSDL (Protean) or UTIITSL. There are two modes of application: Physical (Submitting documents via post) and Digital (Paperless via Aadhaar e-KYC).

Is PAN-Aadhaar linking still free?

No. The free linking window has closed. As of now, you have to pay a non-refundable late fee of ₹1,000 to link your PAN with Aadhaar.

What is the difference between e-PAN and physical PAN card?

e-PAN is a digitally signed electronic version of your PAN card that is equally valid as the physical card. The main differences are:

  • e-PAN is available instantly while physical card takes 15-20 days for delivery.
  • e-PAN is free to download (from ITD) while physical card requires payment.
  • Both are legally valid for all official purposes.
How long does it take to get a new PAN card?

For Digital Mode (e-KYC), e-PAN is often allotted within a few hours to 2 days. Physical card delivery takes 10-15 working days. For Physical Mode application, the entire process takes about 15-20 working days.

What documents are required for New PAN card application?

For Digital Mode, only Aadhaar Card is sufficient (if mobile is linked). For Physical mode, you need proof of identity, address, and DOB (Aadhaar covers all three).
